What actually moves the herd is rainfall — specifically, where the last good rain fell, and how far the grass has grown since. The migration effectively follows the rain by a few weeks' lag. A dry June pushes crossings later; an early rain can pull them forward by ten days without warning.

"The Mara River crossing" isn't one event — it's dozens of possible crossing points, used unpredictably across a window that typically runs July through October. Local guides watch three things closely: herd density building on one side of the river, the animals' visible hesitation, and river flow. This is precisely the kind of moment we mean when we say some things can't be rescheduled.
